TO THE CITY: AFTER FRANS MASEREEL "THE CITY"

This piece celebrates the life of the painter and graphic artist Frans Masereel who was born in the Belgian town of Blankenberghe in 1889. He was unable to return to Belgium after World War One because as a pacifist he refused to serve in the Belgian army. He is known especially for his woodcuts which focused on political and social issues, such as war and capitalism.
